Chapter Fifteen

“We’re down to the wire. Jack isn’t back yet, and we must make the decision. There’s two weeks until the regional race. If you’re not ready, Hemi, we need to know now.”

Hemi glanced around the room. Drag leaned against the bed of a hauler. Snapper and Gina were standing near his office door, Snapper’s arms wrapped around Gina as if the close contact wasn’t just natural but necessary.

Hemi briefly considered if he looked the same way with Sophia or if he could ever leave her with such a content expression on her face. Because Gina seemed completely relaxed even as Full Throttle was on the verge of being utterly screwed.

“Can I take a day to think about it?”

Drag threw a wrench across the room, the metal piece bouncing and echoing off the walls. “Yes, that’s fine.”

“Tell me how you really feel?” Hemi replied with a half-hearted chuckle, then he saw her. The curly brown hair was a dead giveaway…her bandaged hands, torn pants at the thighs and knees, dirt marring her face and the sun goggles on the top of her head…

Shannon.

Hemi crossed over to Drag and nudged him with his toe then his cybernetic arm. Their fearless leader scowled at him, then he angled his head toward the door, just as Snapper seemed to catch on.

“Where’s Jack?” the lead mechanic called out.

“He’s been taken.”

Turned out Hemi’s anxiety was well-deserved. “Fuck.”

Drag patted Hemi on the shoulder. Whatever frustrations had existed a minute ago were no longer. Not with this new problem on their doorstep.

As Hemi turned, he saw Gina headed toward Shannon. He tensed, ready to charge forward and separate the two, but the AI surprised him by wrapping Shannon up in a hug.

Gina leaned in close and whispered something in Shannon’s ear. The words were enough to spawn tears. Her voice cracked as she replied loudly, “I’m fine, but Jack…Bridget took him.”

The AI seemed to hold onto Shannon even more, offering support. “We thought something went wrong when he didn’t return with you. We’ve been discussing options. Now you’re here and we have answers. You must have been frightened.”

Hemi was super confused. What options? He’d been left out of the loop, and he glanced at Drag, who shook his head, a firm set to his lips. That was the ‘not right now’ response. If Hemi was being left out of even more conversations, then why the hell was he even here?

Shannon’s voice echoed in the room, her frustration clear. “I’m not frightened. I’m angry and I want to get Jack back. He shouldn’t have to pay for my mistakes.”

Hemi flipped back toward the women, watching close as Gina pulled away, then stepped back. “You love him?”

Love? Was that important… Shannon had mentioned mistakes.

“What’s that got to do with it?” Snapper marched toward them. “Bridget’s crazy. He could already be dead.”

There was a lot Snapper was leaving out, like how Bridget was his half-sister. She’d been the reason both Snapper and Drag had cybernetic arms to begin with. The
